The NFL tournaments, competition and contest are speech art competitions that are organized for students in high school. This organization is a non profit and non partisan youth league. The main purpose of the National Forensic League is to encourage and motivate secondary school pupils in speech art. It offers college scholarships as motivation to winners in the speech art competitions. Examples of facets in Speech art are like debate, interscholastic debate, oral interpretation of literature, public speaking, community speaking and so on. The National Forensic League plays a major role in high school debate competition and contests.

The National forensic league boasts of a membership base that run to over a million members globally. All members of National Forensic League must abide to the NFL code of honor which consists of five tenets. These tenets include: service, integrity, leadership, humility and respect. On approval from their principal and payment of all the associated fees, students in private and public secondary schools can become members of NFL.

Points are earned by students when they participate in student congress, speech contest, community speaking, and interscholastic debate. Degrees are also awarded by these organization based on the number of points accrued by any particular student. Points accrued by students from a particular school are also factored in when deciding the number of student the school can field at the NFL tournaments

Some of the degrees awarded by the NFL include; Degree of merit which is secured on attaining twenty five points; Degree of honor which is awarded if a participant attains seventy five points; Degree of excellence which is awarded on attaining one hundred and fifty points; The degree of distinction which is awarded on attaining two hundred and fifty points; Special distinction degree awarded on attaining five hundred points and the outstanding distinction degree which is awarded on attaining one thousand points.

National Forensic League seeks to empower young people in High schools to be ethical individuals, effective communicators, critical thinkers and leaders in a democratic society. These values are encrypted in the Leagues mission statement. The league is keen on increasing public awareness on the value speech, debate and communication. This it does by organizing nation wide contests and competitions.

Winners in these contests are awarded over one hundred thousand dollars in college scholarship. This is a major motivation factor to all participating students. Though there are some life long members, only students in high school are allowed to participate in the tournaments.

Since 1931 the countrywide speech competition has been held through out without fail. The only time that it was not held was during the World War Two period between 1939 and 1945. Students in this in these competitions contest in public forums, story telling, poetry reading, value debate, policy debate, original oratory, and prose reading among other competitions

NFL tournaments are usually carried out at state, national and district levels. Points that any member accrues in the state or district level catapult the participant to compete at the national tournament. There are other points that participant can garner, this are called the service points. For instance if a participant addresses or delivers a speech to about twenty five adults he or she is entitled to 25 service points.
